Crate Paper – Notes and Things …
You Are So Loved
There are some collections that come along and when you first see the sneak peek, they’re so lovely and so right up your street that you take a sharp intake of breath … and this was one – Crate Paper’s Notes and Things.
I’m a big fan of frames and I love playing around with all the sweet bits and pieces in ephemera packs so these two items were a must from this collection. I hadn’t used rub-ons in a long time but I must say, these are bang up to date. Lots of lovely messy sewing strips, arrows, typewriter font phrases and all-round loveliness. I honestly think there isn’t one I wouldn’t use , in fact I’ve bought another pack because they’re so versatile.
The background is made on speciality stamping card which has a smooth finish. Drip some ink drops in whatever colour combinations you wish to feature onto a splat mat and add a few drops of surgical spirit and a squirt of metallic alcohol ink. Swirl it around with a palette knife then just dab your paper onto the mess in front of you. It might look pretty grim to start with but you can always add more surgical spirit direct to the page and then blow it around with a hairdryer to achieve some arty drip features which look like they’re trying to escape from the page !
With this as my background I simply ripped apart the Crate Paper – Notes and Things – Ephemera Pack , a pack of the chipboard frames, a pack of the rub-ons and a roll of the kraft tickets and got busy layering and arranging . It really was that easy.
I added some gold thread to one of the mini tags in the ephemera pack and let the stands dangle down alongside the photo as I thought it echoed the golden threads of his sun-bleached beach hair.
Of course with two boys I can’t make just one layout of one of my boys, so it was easy as pie to make another similar but not identical layout for my eldest son as the embellishment packs are full to bursting and I still have loads left over.

Happy Moments
I’ve noticed that I don’t always add a title – partly because I can never think of what to call a layout and partly because sometimes the accents speak for themselves , as in this case – it was indeed a happy moment , watching my niece’s daughter play around with some scrapping supplies I’d bought for her.
The sheets of paper from Crate Paper’s Notes and Things Collection called Schedule and So Simple , cried out to be cut apart into all its triangular loveliness. It was easy then simply to layer them up with foam dots to give it dimension and tuck in a few items from the co-ordinating Ephemera Pack, a few triangles cut from the Studio Calico Lemonlush Coloured Vellum Pack to give it some softness and a couple of triangle cut from Shimelle’s 6″ x 6″pad. A stamped triangular border completes the layout. Oh and thank goodness for Photoshop – managed to drop the ink pad onto the finished layout as I was about to photograph it ( my favourite trick ) but you wouldn’t guess thankfully ! I’ll have to go back and add a strategically placed triangle to cover it up in real life !

And lastly – another layout without a title , although there are subtle hints as to where we are in the photos , a very distinctive flag bottom right and an edelweiss flower in the top right corner might give it away !
We visit Switzerland every year and the views really are picture postcard. There’s a stunning view from every window which is why I decided to use the frames from Crate Paper’s Notes and Things Collection to capture those picturesque snapshots, as if taken through a window frame. It seemed indulgent to use so many frames on one layout but hey, they’re not rationed and there’s still half of the pack left.
I absolutely love using frames and I combined these with some more of the rub – ons from Crate Paper’s Notes and Things Collection. Although I didn’t have enough of the double lined frame rub-ons, they were easy enough to copy with a black pen. I echoed this effect with a double lined frame around the page to complete the look. The hardest part of this layout was choosing the photos from the thousands we’ve taken over the years.
When I’m playing around with the positioning of frames on a layout , I tend to rotate the page a quarter turn at a time to make sure the page is balanced from all angles , which I then photograph on my phone. Works for me.
