Doodle crazy!
Hi, it’s Louise back with a few LOs to share. This month I chose Authentique, Celebrate as the basis for my blog post. As soon as I saw these papers I knew the colours and designs would be really usable for scrapping photos of my boys. Straight away I was drawn to the bold floral pattern on one of the papers, although it was a bit too ‘in your face’ for the photo I wanted to scrap. I painted a thin layer of white acrylic paint roughly over the paper, allowing the pattern and colours to show through. I then added a few squirts of yellow mist. With a black biro I doodled over the paper, using the patterns as a guide, and filling in spaces with random doodling of my own. Once this was done the LO was kept very simple. I used a mix of thicker alphas, which is a great way to use up left overs.
Usually I don’t like to scrap birthday photos, especially with ‘themed’ papers. So I challenged myself to scrap a photo taken of Harry at his 5th birthday party.
The cupcake patterned paper was just perfect to use, and quite subtle even though it’s themed. I stamped onto kraft using a grid stamp and versamark ink, and doodled over part of the design with a black pen.
The doodling continued onto the stamped title, which I added a shadow too and hand drawn stars and circles. As soon as I unpacked the American Crafts WOW fine glitter at the retreat, I knew I was going to have to use it on this LO. I added it to one of the do it yourself number thickers first, before deciding that I wanted more on the LO.
I used a cocktail stick dipped into tombo glue to fill in the stars on the title, before covering with glitter. As the glitter is so fine, it is great to use on small areas of detail.
Another must have purchase I made at the retreat was the gorgeous days of the week stamps by Jenni Bowlin. They are quite big, but I can see these getting used a lot. They are perfect for hand cutting round
A few years ago I created a few LOs that didn’t use any patterned paper. I created my own custom paper, by doodling using colours to suit my photo.
I created a small piece of doodled paper to add behind my title on this LO. There was no deliberate intention with the doodling, it was literally the type you do when on hold on the phone. I used red and black American Crafts journaling pens, which were great because they are double ended, with a fine and a medium tip.
The Ranger white gel pen has a lovely opaque finish and is perfect for doodling onto black card stock.
For my last LO, I decided to go for it on the doodling front. Here’s how I created my doodled background.
First I misted white card stock with turquoise..
Once that had dried a used a roller stamp to add a black grid design. I kept this random and overlapped the design.
Once the ink was dry I doodled using a black pen. I drew the skull and crossbones and added lots of stars, sun bursts and squiggles.
I used a yellow ink pad and stamped the Studio Calico alphabet background over the doodled images. This gives a very subtle, barely there effect, which I really like. I also stamped a red block design in a few places, only lightly pressing on so the stamped image was patchy.
Then I added some blue arrows over the top.
You can layer and layer your doodling and stamping to get a really dense design, or leave it like this. There is no right or wrong when you are creating your own patterned paper, just stop when you are happy.
I used the new Jenni Bowling outline alpha stamps with the do it yourself glittered thickers to create the title. I gave the glittered part of the title a black shadow to make them pop from the page.
And here is the final LO. A picture of Drew with journaling about how quick the time has gone from him being a new born to a 3 year old.
