You Rock! Scrapbooking with Cocoa Vanilla Studio

Cocoa Vanilla Studio have fast become one of my favourite manufacturers to work with. Their collections are fresh and fun, with beautiful embellishments and stunning paper designs. This month I’ve been creating with the latest collection to hit the shop from Cocoa Vanilla Studio – You Rock.

This collection is aimed at boys, with plenty of pieces that say things like “awesome”, “boy oh boy” and “you rock”. It mixes blues and greys with sunny yellows and oranges on a base of white. Perfect for my many photos of my two sons. I started with this group of photos from last year. Just an ordinary day, but some lovely smiley moments while playing with his toys. There was no big story to tell here, so I opted for squeezing all 4 photos onto the page and adding plenty of die cuts with relevant phrases on – you rock, happy snaps, hello mister, awesome, and so on.

I hand cut lots of stars out from the ‘Starshine’ paper and dotted them in groups around the page, adding some wood veneer and enamel shapes too. Attaching some of the stars with foam squares adds dimension, and clustering the embellishments around the photos frames them so that your eye goes straight to the main subject of the page. The die cut that says “everything is better when you’re laughing” was just perfect for this page – it was the first thing I picked out to go with the photos, and I worked everything else around it!

For my second page I used a photo of all 3 of my children at the beach – a favourite holiday spot for me growing up, and somewhere I was delighted to take them last year to explore for themselves. The photo is an Instax print, and because it was so sunny it’s rather over exposed. A completely different style of photo to my first page, but no less important when it comes to preserving the memory.

I used white cardstock for my base and layered up strips of paper from the striped cut apart sheet in a column to one side of the page. This collection includes some globes and camera elements, so I added both of those in to emphasise the travel aspect of the memory. My gold subtitle was added with Crate Paper Oasis Puffy phrase stickers and again emphasises that this page is not only about the people in the photo, but the place it was taken. To create my main title I used one of the large wood veneers from the You Rock collection, and backed each letter with patterned paper.

For my third page I used another completely different style of photo. This time, an on ride photo from our recent trip to Disneyland. These photos come with a highly decorated surround, and are very busy looking. I chose to embrace the busy-ness and went with the ‘experimental’ paper as my background which is pre-printed with a mixed media appearance. I’m not generally a messy scrapper who gets involved with ink and paint, but I do love the look it creates! Paper like this allows me to have that look without any of the work (or mess) – perfect.

I scrunched up the edges of my papers and mats for a distressed feel, and splattered some iridescent mist over the wood veneer “awesome” part of my title. This was my 6 year old son’s first big roller coaster, and it felt like a big deal to take him on it – it goes upside down twice! I’m a big fan of roller coasters so this was a huge proud mum moment. I was surprised how many elements in this collection seemed perfect for this page – “go go go”, “super” with speed marks on, the admit one tickets, “high voltage”, “that’s my boy”, and “wow”. All worked perfectly with my story.
